How to Sell Gold Jewellery for the Best Price

By Aurum Trading

Selling gold jewellery can feel daunting, especially if you are not sure what your pieces are worth. This guide walks you through everything you need to know to get the best price for your gold.

Understanding Gold Purity

Gold purity is measured in carats (ct). In the UK, the most common purities are:

  • 9ct gold - 37.5% pure gold (most common in UK jewellery)
  • 14ct gold - 58.5% pure gold
  • 18ct gold - 75% pure gold
  • 22ct gold - 91.7% pure gold (often used in Asian jewellery)
  • 24ct gold - 99.9% pure gold (rare in jewellery, used in bullion)

Higher carat gold is worth more per gram because it contains a higher percentage of pure gold.

How to Check Your Gold

Look for hallmarks stamped on the inside of rings, on clasps, or on the back of pendants. UK hallmarks include the carat number (e.g., 375 for 9ct, 750 for 18ct) along with other marks indicating the assay office and year of manufacture.

If you cannot find a hallmark, it does not necessarily mean the item is not gold. Older pieces or foreign items may not have UK hallmarks. A professional buyer can test the gold for you.

What Affects the Price?

Several factors determine how much your gold jewellery is worth:

  1. Weight - Heavier items contain more gold
  2. Purity - Higher carat means a higher percentage of gold
  3. Current gold price - Gold prices fluctuate daily
  4. Condition - Intact pieces may have additional collectible value beyond their metal weight
  5. Gemstones - Diamonds, rubies, and other gems add value

Tips for Getting the Best Price

  • Get multiple quotes - Always compare offers from different buyers
  • Know the current gold price - Check the live price before selling
  • Do not clean your items - Professional buyers prefer to assess items as-is
  • Sell to specialists - General pawnshops often offer less than dedicated gold buyers
  • Consider the full value - Some items are worth more as jewellery than as scrap gold
